Abstract: Upon evaluation, the patient presented with impaired sensation of the right side of the mouth status/post dental surgery (root resection 45). Patient received five hours of treatment with Integrative Manual Therapy focusing on the left side of the face and head and neck with techniques to treat the nervous and vascular system. After the treatment, the patient reported complete recovery and restoration of normal sensation in his mouth.

Impaired Sensation of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve (Mouth)

Written by, Otto Bong, PT

PROBLEM
A patient suffering from impaired sensation of the inferior alveolar nerve on the right side after dental surgery (root resection 45)

SYMPTOMS
Although there was no direct trauma on the nerve during surgery, a square area of decreased sensitivity - from the right corner of the mouth to half the distance to midline and about 0.5 inches down - remained. 4 weeks after surgery some Vitamin B - Complex supplements were given, but the impaired sensation remained. The patient also presented with paresthesia and “hot/cold” sensations.

THERAPY
The patient was first treated with Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT), 7 months status post dental surgery. The following techniques were applied:

Osseous technique #1, 2, 3 for the mandible;
Bone Bruise Techniques around the mandibular region;
Immune Deficiency Motility around the root area of tooth 45;
Lymph Therapy (Congestion) for face and neck on the right side;
Compression Syndrome of the Mandibular Nerve on the right side (for face and jaw);
Compression Syndrome of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve on the right side (for mouth);
Neural Tissue Tension Technique for the Inferior Alveolar Nerve on the right side;
Compression Syndrome for the kidneys.

RESULT
After 1 hour of treatment with IMT, the area of dysesthesia changed after 5 hours of treatment. Patient reported that sensation was almost fully recovered.
