3. A Sudden Onset of Sciatica: A Case Study - Deborah Kempel, R.M.T.
This case study is on a patient with sciatica who complained of pain and numbness radiating down his right hip and leg. Patient presented with decreased range of motion and function of his right leg with gait deviations. He was treated for four sessions with Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) with a focus on biomechanics. After treatment was completed, patient presented with normal gait, increased range of motion of his right leg, and a total elimination of pain and paresthesia in his right leg. This case study focuses on a 6 week old infant with moderate to severe regurgitation, frequent hiccups, gas, and explosive bowel movements. The baby was also experiencing restlessness and agitation at night. The patient received several sessions of treatment with Integrative Manual Therapy. After therapy was completed, the infant presented with an elimination of the initial regurgitation and hiccups and gas and bowel movements had returned to normal. This case study is about a 19 year old young man who incurred a cranial trauma from a soccer injury. Due to the injury, the man had quit school and started working. He reported dizziness and headaches, an inability to drive, insomnia, and learning disabilities. The patient received two sessions of Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT). After treatment, re-evaluation showed evidence of increased mobility in his lower quadrant as well as increased activities of daily living. The patient reported a total elimination of headaches and dizziness as well as no longer experiencing insomnia. The patient was playing soccer again.

The patient is an eight year old female with quadriplegic hypertonicity\ synergic pattern since birth. From 1993-1997, she received physical therapy based on an NDT (Neurodevelopmental Technique)/functional approach, which allowed assisted ambulation with a walker. Since 1997, treatment has been comprised of techniques developed by Integrative Manual Practitioners.1 With Integrative Manual Therapy, the patient has progressed from assisted to independent ambulation. (She also wears in-shoe orthotics.) This case study documents postural and other changes after a one hour session of Integrative Manual Therapy treatment.

In this case study, the patient is a 52 year old woman with complaints of limitations in activities of daily living including decreased strength of her left arm. The woman received treatment with IMT focusing on her left upper extremity. After treatment was completed, the woman presented with a significant increase in grip strength.

This article is a case report on a 59 year old woman with complaints of chronic multiple joint pain and decreased ease of movement. The patient reported difficulty in activities of daily living, including driving. The woman was evaluated and treated with Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) for a total of three and a half hours. Upon evaluation, patient presented with decreased spinal motion on all planes and pain during motion. The patient was treated with IMT that focused on biomechanics. After treatment was completed, the patient presented with full spinal flexion and an elimination of pain during spinal movement. The patient also had an improvement of static and dynamic posture.

The client was a 31 year old male who was in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) and experienced whiplash in October of 2000. After the accident, the client complained of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, anxiety, and pain during activities of daily living. He was a musician by trade. The man started treatment with Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) two months status/post the MVA. The IMT treatment focused on the client's nervous system, vascular system, and musculoskeletal system. His initial pain complaints ranged 8-9 out of 10 on a visual rating scale. At discharge, the client reported all pain diminished to 0 out of 10.

The woman in this case study was 48 years old and complained of left shoulder pain and paresthesia with a limitation of motion. The patient portrayed in this case study was a 52-year-old woman who had undergone several knee surgeries to repair a tear of the right anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. Upon intake, the woman was experiencing recurrent infection at the knee secondary to a slow-healing graft site following the most recent surgery at the knee. The patient's doctor had referred her to Physical Therapy to prepare her for another surgery at the knee. The woman was treated with Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT), focusing on the right knee joint. After several sessions of IMT were completed, the woman went for knee surgery. Following surgery, the woman stated that she was surprised at how quickly the surgery site was healing. She was treated post-op to facilitate healing at the knee. Four weeks after her surgery, the knee was completely healed with now signs of infection or breakdown of the joint tissues.

This article will provide the objective measurements of shoulder joint range of motion, prior to and following total-body Endermologier sessions for lymphatic drainage. Measurements of bilateral shoulder joint flexion were taken from two female adults, four sessions each. Results indicate significant short-term increases in degree of shoulder flexion, except in one shoulder that required the Integrative Manual Therapy Bone Bruise Technique to the humerus in order to improve shoulder flexion. The authors submit that lymphatic congestion can inhibit shoulder flexion range of motion, that Endermologier has short-term positive effects on shoulder flexion, and that the presence of humeral Bone Bruises inhibit this increase of range of motion.

49. The Relationship Between Bone Bruises and Lymphedema After Fracture: A Case Study - Tanya Crowell, P.T.
Bone bruises of the tibia have been extensively studied using MRI technology. It is now verified that bone bruising is a common injury accompanying meniscal, ligamentous, and other injuries (3, 4, 6). This case study presents bone bruising that occurred throughout the tibia along with an occult fracture of the lower tibia and fibula. There was also bruising of the fibula to a lesser degree. Significant lymph tissue involvement caused secondary problems with edema, as well as pain. This paper will look at lymph involvement secondary to bone bruising and the relationship between the two.

This study illustrates the benefits of Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) on a client with FMS. The woman was treated with IMT with a focus on the immune system and lymphatic drainage. The woman was also treated with Endermologie. After therapy was completed, the woman had significant improvement including a decrease in her medications and a significant improvement in levels of fatigue.

This case report is a single subject study of a patient who had Recurrent herpes Simplex Virus. The patient presented with a cold sore lesion that covered the entire naso-labial space, and half of the upper lip along the entire length of the lip. The patient was treated with Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) focusing on skin (Skin Motilities) to the lesion. After treatment was completed, the patient reported that the entire lesion sloughed off between twelve and twenty hours after the time of the treatment and application of the poultice. The skin was intact without scarring.

This article illustrates the benefits of Psychosynthesis work. This case study focuses on a 76 year old woman who suffered a Cerebral Vascular Accident. Upon evaluation, the woman complained of right-sided weakness and left wrist pain due to carpal tunnel syndrome. The woman presented with expressive aphasia and dysarthria. Function was limited, especially of the right upper extremity. The woman was treated for one hour with Integrative Manual Therapy focusing on Integrative Diagnostics for Applied Psychosynthesis. After treatment was completed, there was significant improvement observed in transfers as well as a decrease in aphasia.

This case study focuses on a five-year-old boy with the label of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Upon evaluation, the boy presented with predominantly low muscle tone and hyperactivity. The body was treated with Integrative Manual Therapy and Sensory Integration. After therapy was completed, the body presented with a significant change in his behavior and interaction with others, including an increase in his verbalization and appropriateness of his interaction.

Approximately 25,000 ankle inversion injuries occur each day in the United States. Yet, aside from surgery, there is little mention of structural rehabilitation in the literature.(1) After an extensive review of the literature, orthopedists Lynch and Renstrom found "that early functional treatment provided the fastest recovery of ankle mobility and earliest return to work and was complication free, whereas surgery had serious, though infrequent, complications."(2) Although functional treatment has been shown to be effective, what the literature does not show, as yet, is how the application of various manual therapy techniques might effect the course of recovery. Canine parvovirus (CPV) disease is currently the most common infectious disorder of dogs in the United States1. It is a highly contagious viral disease that attacks the intestinal track, white blood cells, and in extreme cases the cardiac muscle. The most common clinical signs include diarrhea (that is often bloody), depression, loss of appetite, and vomiting2. The majority of cases that are seen are in dogs less than 6 months old with the most severe and deadly cases in puppies under 12 weeks1. Most deaths occur within 48-72 hours of initial onset of clinical signs. In the past, a high percentage of dogs under the age of 5 months died from the disease2. 59. Treatment of In-toeing and Genu Varus in an Infant Using Integrative Manual Therapy - Charlotte Branch, PT and Nancy Bupte, OTR
This pediatric client was thirteen months old at evaluation. The mother brought the infant for evaluation and treatment with Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) for complaints of in-toeing. Between 6 and 10 months, the child was observed repeatedly by the mother to resist weightbearing on the left lower extremity when standing or ambulating with assistance. During ambulation, she was observed toeing-in with her left foot and she displayed a severe genu-varus in bilateral lower extremities. The child's physician recommended the possibility of using leg splints if the problem persisted. The infant was treated with IMT for her lower extremities. She was treated with lower extremity Compression Syndromes, including Osseous Compression Syndromes, Osseous Torsions, and techniques for her Medullary Cavities. This case report is to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of a treatment session utilizing Integrative Manual Therapy techniques. The treatment consisted of 3 one hour sessions. Pre and post treatment pictures were taken to view functional outcome results. Prior to treatment, the patient presented with significant limitations in spinal motion.
